I stayed at Fauna for two nights during my trip to Costa Rica and really enjoyed it. It was clean, affordable, near the city of San Jose, and a very relaxed atmosphere! Below, I’ve taken a look at some factors that I think are key in choosing a good hostel!

BEDS

I’m 6’5” and I fit easily on the beds at Fauna. I stayed in a mixed 6-person dorm that had pods similar to the one pictured above. Each little pod has a night light, outlet, and curtain to pull closed for a little more privacy - a factor that I ended up really appreciating! The beds were extremely comfortable and provided a great night’s sleep.

STORAGE

Luggage storage is always important to me because if I’m going to be adventuring around all day, I want some peace of mind that my stuff won’t get swiped. Fauna provides big cubbies in each room that are large enough for a pretty large suitcase. One thing to keep in mind is that they do not lock on their own, so you must bring your OWN small lock to close the locker. You can find them for like $4 at your local Walmart. I kept my backpack on my bed at night because there wasn’t space for both my backpack and suitcase in the locker, but that was an extremely minor detail in my mind.

BATHROOMS

The bathrooms were clean and the shower was warm. These are the basics for what I look for. If you can get some good water pressure, then that’s icing on the cake. One thing that’s nice is that there is just one shower in the bathroom, so you have some privacy.

BAR

The bar at the hostel is pretty small but has plenty of seating and a great view into the garden. I was only at the bar one night but met travelers from all over. Not the party type of crowd but a great relaxing way to end my trip. In addition to the nighttime atmosphere, Fauna also offers a small breakfast option. Make sure your reservation includes this. If not, you’ll be stuck paying for it at the front desk.

NOTES

The hostel is technically in Escazu which is just a short distance from the heart of San Jose. It’s about 25-40 minutes depending on time of day and traffic from the airport. If you get in at night and need a local place before venturing out into Costa Rica, Fauna is definitely you’re place.

VALUE

For just $7 per night, how can this ever NOT be a great value?!? If you are close to San Jose, Fauna is a MUST!!
