Grindelwald, Switzerland: Youth Hostel Grindelwald (HI)
Beds
I stayed in a 4-person dorm which as located in a separate building from the main office. Pretty average dorm room, nothing much to be mentioned. Biggest downside is that there are not nearly enough outlets in the room for everybody and none of them are close to the beds. Definitely a big negative. I will say though, that the view out the window was incredible!
Bathroom
There’s a sink in each room and community bathrooms with two showers and two bathrooms in separate rooms (male and female each have two rooms). Bathrooms were nice and clean; always a plus.
Bar
What bar? There’s no bar. You can buy cans of beer at the front desk and you can order food ahead of time for dinner from a fixed menu each night, but I never took that option.
Storage
There’s a closet for each person in the dorm room but it wasn’t big enough for my suitcase so I never used it. You’ll have to bring your own lock if you wish to use it, however.
Notes
This hostel is part of Hostelling International, which typically is a barebones hosteling experience (at least in my limited experience). There really wasn’t any socializing because there were mainly families and older folks. I had a 60+ year old man in my dorm room one night which was weird considering it’s a “youth” hostel.
Value
As with most of Switzerland, be prepared to pay. This hostel cost me over $65USD per night. Tough on the wallet for sure. But considering it may be the cheapest place in town, you might not have much of an option. I will say, the breakfast view on the back porch might make it all worth it though!
