Interlaken, Switzerland: Balmer's Hostel

Beds

My bed was definitely comfortable and long enough. It was a little bit of a different set up in that there were no bunks, just single beds spread out around the room. Honestly, I thought it was great because it eliminated the potential for someone to move around a bunch and wake me up. The only negative was that my bed was right near a slanted ceiling about 18” above my head, so I definitely had to be careful to not bust my forehead on it. There were a few close calls.

Bathroom

The bathrooms were out in the hallway and the sinks were public but the showers and toilets were in these little individual stalls. It was one of the more unique set ups I’ve seen at a hostel. You still have privacy but the quarters a little small. Also, there’s no ventilation so if someone takes a hot shower, the humidity will be 10,000%.

Bar

There’s a nice outdoor patio with a bar and seating areas along with a slack line, hot tub, lounge chairs, hammocks, etc. I had a great burger and beer from the bar here. I stayed on a Monday night so it was pretty quiet, but the weekends can get a little crazy. There’s even a club on site which is open Thursday-Saturday I believe!

Storage

There was no storage at all in my room which was really the only downfall of this hostel. Definitely plan on bringing a lock for your items. If you need to though, there is a storage area in back of the hostel that you can keep your items in during the day. Some of the bigger suitcases won’t fit, so you’ll still need a lock. There are lockers for smaller bags though.

Notes

This is a VERY popular hostel in Interlaken (probably the most popular), so if you have ANY desire to stay here, book early!! I can’t stress that enough. It’s super close to local bus lines, food options, adventure options, and pretty much anything your heart desires!

My favorite part of the hostel was the hammock room on the third floor. Such a unique option in Switzerland to kick back and nap or work or just relax!

Value

This was by far the cheapest hostel I stayed at in Switzerland. It’ll still run you about $45 depending on time of the year but given the cost difference plus social atmosphere, it’s an easy win on the value scale! Plus Interlaken is downright gorgeous.

*I’ve seen rooms here as low as $24 so depending on the month and how early you book, you might get lucky!
