I stayed at Selina La Fortuna for two nights during my trip to Costa Rica and loved the hostel. There was a great atmosphere, perfect hang out spots, and great food! Below, I’ve taken a look at some factors that I think are key in choosing a good hostel!

BEDS

I need to be honest. The beds were rough. I stayed in a mixed 6-person dorm and had the unfortunate pleasure of staying on a top bunk. I usually don’t mind it, but these were some of the loudest beds I’ve ever slept on. So any time I moved, it sounded like a building was about to collapse. The beds were fairly small and I had to sleep in a fetal position most of the time. In addition, there was no air conditioning in my room and only one fan in the far corner that was pretty weak, so needless to say, it was a warm, loud night.

STORAGE

The storage was pretty much non-existent. There were some cubbies that you could use, but they were either broken or would only fit my backpack. I kept my suitcase underneath the bottom bunk, which was fine because I had locks on it, but as far as storage goes, don’t plan on it.

BATHROOMS

The bathroom next to our room was a co-ed bathroom with one bathroom stall and two shower stalls. The showers weren’t terribly clean, so if you’re not a sandals-in-the-shower person, I suggest you become one for a few nights. The positive is that the showers did get very hot!

BAR

The bar was the best part of this hostel in my opinion! I loved hanging out at night around the bar, grabbing a few drinks and food and just talking to all the other travelers. It wasn’t a huge party hostel, but people were definitely there to have fun and socialize! In the bar area there are some great swings, bar top seats, tables, swimming pool, foosball, Jenga, and more! Outside of the bar area there is even a Yoga Studio with a great atmosphere.

NOTES

In addition to everything listed above, there’s a great co-working space. This is something that Selina is known for in all their hostels! If you stay at Selina La Fortuna, check out tours of Rio Celeste Waterfall, as well as a local hot spring!

VALUE

I paid $12 for this hostel and loved the value! While there are some areas they can improve on, I would absolutely recommend it and would love to stay here again!
